During her years of practice, Dr. Esses developed her own unique style of working by incorporating a variety of different approaches including family systems therapy, psychodynamic theory, gestalt therapy, and cognitive behavior therapy. Always interested in learning more, she studied with some of the forerunners in the field including Virginia Satir, Dr, Salavador Minuchin, Dr. Judith Orloff, and Dr. Gabor Mate. She has a holistic view of health which led her to train in many different areas outside of mainstream psychology including Chinese Medicine, acupuncture, meditation, bodywork, and medicinal aromatherapy. She also became proficient in using Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, (EMDR), Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and hypnosis.
She chose to do a holistic practice rather than specializing in one particular interest area. Some of the primary issues addressed with clients in therapy included:
- Separation and Divorce
- Grief and Loss
- Bipolar Disorder
- Eating Disorder
- Chronic Pain
- Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
- Workplace Related Stressors
- Anger Management
- Family Transition and Development
- Relationship Conflict
She has given workshops and done public speaking addressing many of these areas of interest. She also was very frank about having been in therapy herself and the fact that she never worked with clients using forms of therapy she has not tried herself.
