Like most senior therapists who have been in practice for many years, Dr. Esses is proficient in quite a range of different orientations which makes it possible for her to choose what orientation will work best for each client depending on the particular problem that they are struggling with and their particular style of learning.
Dr. Esses has a very strong background in systems theory which makes her an excellent family therapist and couples therapist and also makes her particularly attuned to relationship issues when working with individual clients.
She also has a solid training background in behavior therapy and psychodynamic theory which allows her to do both short-term as well as long-term work with individuals. For instance, Dr. Esses makes strong use of her knowledge of cognitive behaviour therapy when working with clients who are struggling with depression and /or anxiety.
Dr. Esses takes a holistic view of health care and as a result has trained in a number of areas outside of mainstream psychology including Chinese Medicine, acupuncture, meditation, bodywork and medicinal aromatherapy. She also has training and is proficient in using Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and hypnosis.
